A HDD (Hard Disk Drive) is one of the most essential parts of the computer. It is not only a data storage device; It contains the operating system, without one the computer is not going to run. Below I will try to mention all the most important features you have to know to choose a proper HDD for your computer, whether you are building new or upgrading your PC.
There are mainly two types of HDD used in personal computers: ATA and SATA. In order not to avoid frustrations, we need to find out, what type of HDD you need. ATA is older version and needs IDE slot and ATA data cable. ATA cables usually come in three colors: grey, yellow and black. ATA cable is wide and flat. SATA cable is small and thin, usually yellow or red. Today all the new motherboards have only one ATA slot, which means ATA is going to become a history and instead there are more than four SATA slots, when older ones had only two or four.
Another noticeable difference between the two types is the speed. SATA offers higher data transfer rates. While both types have 5400 rpm and 7200 rpm (rounds per minute), roughly speaking, SATA 7200rpm is faster than ATA 7200rpm.
Once you picked your HDD we need to connect it to the motherboard correctly. HDD has jumpers that define its position as Master or Slave. Even if you have never heard of Master HDD and Slave HDD, you can guess what it might mean. Master is the one, which is used for containing and booting the system. The jumper of the Master hard drive must be set to Master and if there is an additional HDD, the additional HDD must be set as Slave. The jumper positions are indicated clearly on the label of any HDD. The jumper positions are very important! If there is a mistake, the computer will not “see” the HDD.
While connecting the HDD to the motherboard, you must pay attention to the numbers beside the slots. Master hard drive must be connected to the first slot and the Slave DVD must be connected to the 2nd slot. By the way the DVD drive also has the same type of jumper settings. Always, DVD or CD drives are slaves.
Be careful with ATA cable, if it is connected the wrong way, which is physically possible, it will not work. The cable has red line on one side, which indicates the “polarity”. Red line must be on the side of the pin number 1.
